Ceremonies

HOLUD - Thursday, October 8, 2009
- Where: Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel (former Wandlyn Inn)
958 Prospect St, Fredericton, NB
- When: 6pm
- What: Holud is a wedding custom particular to the Bengali people. Dinner will be served (Indian/Bengali food), followed by a cultural show

Holud means "yellow" in Bengali. Traditionally, tumeric is rubbed on the bride and groom's faces by the guests at Holud. This is said to soften the skin - it also colours the skin with the distinctive yellow hue that gives its name to this ceremony. Henna is also used at Holud to decorate the bride's hands and feet with elaborate, abstract designs.

The bride, groom, and guests traditionally wear red, yellow, orange, or green clothing. The guests enjoy a feast and an exciting cultural show. This celebration most resembles an engagement party in the Western tradition.

Note : Ladies and Gents - if any of our guests are willing to wear sarees or Bengali traditional clothes, please contact Abid and Sarah for ideas on what to wear (Abid's family may be able to provide sarees/garments for our female guests). East Indian garments are not mandatory, nor do you need to strictly abide by the yellow/red colour scheme. Please wear whatever wedding clothes you feel comfortable in!
